The sun reflects differently off the ice than it does off the water. The still water creates a mirror and reflects back the world above it as we see it. The prevents us from seeing beneath the surface of the pond. The ice blocks that view beneath, but it also absorbs the view above and only reflects back the light. Not the sky. Not the tree. Not anything.
